The Goianápolis story begins in 1935 when several families sought for the area and pig farm land lease. Already in 1940 the assembly was consolidated and in 1949 became a district of Annapolis.
In the early years Goianápolis had at least two nicknames: By far back as 1935 there was a gate in the village with the words: Town of Good Hope. But the town was also called Currutela.
In 1948, Councilman Ubaldino Arlindo de Freitas, who was the first political representative of the region, presented the City of Annapolis, the proposed creation of the District, with the name of Goianápolis.
In July 1948 was officially the creation of the District of Goianápolis belonging to the city of Annapolis, installed in January 1949.
In 1958, through a movement led by then-Councilman John Baptist Machado, Goianápolis was elevated to a municipality. The creation of the district took place in November 1961, but the installation only took place on June 30, 1963.
The country music has long been a tradition in the city of broad Goianápolis. Leandro and Leonardo are the most illustrious sons, and that allowed the projection of the city on the national scene, Goianápolis also has several other singers and double high-quality music, originating in Catira and Folia de Reis.
Since 1984 the festival was created in Tomato. It is always held in mid-July, with concerts, choice of queen of the party and contest the pope tomatoes. The tomato crop resulted in a cuisine based on this product. Since the jam until the bullet tomato, everything is produced in Goianápolis. Goianápolis was founded by Mr. Joaquim Soares da Silva, who built the Roman Catholic Church, the school Gupo Joaquim Soares da Silva who is now high school, he built the first works of the then "Currutela the Sausage," pejorative nickname used to identify heritage located on the banks of BR-153/BR-060, linking Goiânia to Annapolis.
His emancipation occurred in November 14, 1958.
Goianápolis is known nationally for being the capital of the tomato. In 1957, major producers of several places heard of a fertile soil and hence began to migrate people from all over the state of Goiás, forming the city.

The highways leading to the municipality are the GO-415 and BR-153/BR-060 (concomitant stretch between the two roads). There is also the GO-010/BR-457, which has a junction with the GO-415 in Senator Canedo.

A história de Goianápolis começa em 1935, quando várias famílias procuraram a região para a criação de porcos e arrendamento de terras. Já na década de 1940 o ajuntamento estava consolidado e em 1949 tornou-se distrito de Anápolis.
Nos anos iniciais, Goianápolis teve pelo menos dois apelidos: Pelos idos de 1935 havia uma porteira no vilarejo com os dizeres: Vila da Boa Esperança. Mas o povoado também era chamado de Currutela.
No ano de 1948, o vereador Arlindo Ubaldino de Freitas, que foi o primeiro representante político da região, apresentou, à Câmara Municipal de Anápolis, a proposta de criação do Distrito, já com o nome de Goianápolis.
Em julho de 1948 foi oficializada a criação do Distrito de Goianápolis, pertencente ao município de Anápolis, instalado em janeiro de 1949.
Em 1958, através de um movimento liderado pelo então vereador João Batista Machado, Goianápolis foi elevada à categoria de município. A criação da Comarca se deu em novembro de 1961, mas sua instalação só se realizou em 30 de junho de 1963.
A música sertaneja tem sido uma tradição muito ampla na cidade de Goianápolis. Leandro e Leonardo são os filhos mais ilustres, e que permitiram a projeção da cidade no cenário nacional, Goianápolis tem, também, diversos outros cantores e duplas com grande qualidade musical, originários da Catira e da Folia de Reis.
A partir de 1984 foi criada a festa do Tomate. Ela sempre é realizada na segunda quinzena de julho, com shows, escolha da rainha da festa, e concurso do papa tomates. A cultura do tomate originou uma culinária baseada nesse produto. Desde a geléia até a bala de tomate, tudo é produzido em Goianápolis. Goianápolis teve como fundador o Sr. Joaquim Soares da Silva, que construiu a Igreja Católica Apostólica Romana, o gupo escolar Joaquim Soares da Silva que hoje tem Ensino Médio, edificou as primeiras obras da então "Currutela da Linguiça", cognome pejorativo utilizado para identificar o patrimônio localizado às margens da BR-153/BR-060, que liga Goiânia a Anápolis.
Sua emancipação ocorreu em 14 de novembro de 1958.
Goianápolis é conhecida nacionalmente por ser a capital do tomate. Em 1957 grandes produtores de vários lugares ouviram falar de um solo fértil e dai começaram a migrar pessoas de todo o estado de Goiás, formando a cidade.

As rodovias que dão acesso ao município são a GO-415 e a BR-153/BR-060 (trecho concomitante entre as duas rodovias). Há ainda a GO-010/BR-457, que possui um entroncamento com a GO-415 em Senador Canedo.
