O filme começa com um jogador de futebol, Lorry (Prateik Babbar), que junto com sua namorada é a admissão em uma faculdade americana. Mas por insuficiência de fundos, ele é incapaz de realizar seu sonho. Ele é triste como a sua namorada está deixando para seu amigo, Ricky (Gulshan Devaiah), cheers-lo levando-o para uma festa. Ele então diz que ele pode levá-lo para a faculdade dos EUA, onde sua namorada vai ser, mas há apenas uma condição. Para fazer isso, ele terá de contrabandear alguns pacotes de cocaína junto com ele. No começo, ele discorda, mas então ele finalmente concorda e fica cocaína selados em suas malas. No aeroporto ele passe na máquina de raios X e está tudo pronto para sair.

Enquanto isso, Kamath continua com a investigação sobre quem é Michael Barbosa. Leva-o a navio onde ele luta contra todos os bandidos, mas perde-se Barbosa. Isso o leva a lugar nenhum.

Crítico

Pratik parece confuso e você não quer tirar os olhos dele quando ele está na tela. Bipasha parece adequada traumatizada "[8].
Anupama Chopra de NDTV deu uma classificação de duas estrelas e meia dizendo "Maaro Dum Dum tem todos os ingredientes de entretenimento crepitante. Este é um filme que deve subir, mas, infelizmente, nunca completamente toma o vôo. O problema é a escrita. Controvérsia

The film starts with a footballer, Lorry (Prateik Babbar), who along with his girlfriend gets admission into an American college. But due to insufficient funds, he is unable to fulfill his dream. He is sad as his girlfriend is leaving so his friend, Ricky (Gulshan Devaiah), cheers him up by taking him to a party. He then tells him that he can get him into the US college where his girlfriend is going to be, but there only one condition. To do that he will have to smuggle a few packets of cocaine along with him. At first he disagrees but then he finally agrees and gets cocaine sealed in his bags. At the airport he successfully passes the X-ray machine and is all set to leave.
The story then flashes back a few years and introduces us to ACP Vishnu Kamath (Abhishek Bachchan). Kamath is a corrupt cop who accepts a lot of bribes in order to satisfy his family. But one day it turns out that life takes revenge from him and his family dies in a car accident. Then back to the present year, he is offered a job by the Chief Minister of Goa. The job is to flush out all the drug gangsters in Goa. He accepts the job and forms a team who helps him with the case. According to Goa Police Department, the drug supply in Goa is distributed in four parts. One is the Russian Drug Mafia, the other is Nigerian, then English and the final one is the local people of Goa. First they attack the Russian Region, then carry on with Nigeria and England and the local. This leads to a panic among the drug suppliers and as a result Rave Parties are cancelled and the drug supply comes to a halt. The drug dealers gather for a meeting lead by Zoey (Bipasha Basu). Zoey guarantees them that their drugs will be in safe hands, if they give them away to a person named Michael Barbosa, a person who has no identity and moves like a shadow and has helped them out for ages. All of the Drug dealers agree with Zoey. This frustrates Kamath as he is unable to get to the drugs. So he decides to chase Michael Barbosa in order to get the drugs. He finds out Via his sources about of the drug dealer named Ricky. Ricky is all set with Lorry to smuggle drugs to USA, but when Kamath reaches out for Ricky, he is already dead. Kamath and his cops check out Ricky's apartment where they find out about him smuggling cocaine to USA, they also find out about his Live-in girlfriend named Rozanna who is from Brazil and once used to see Lorry. So with all this information they reach the Goa International Airport on the same day when Lorry is about to leave. At the airport Kamath encounters Rozanna, Ricky's girlfriend and identifies her as she had been wearing the same kind of a bra that they previously found in Ricky's apartment. The Cops detain Rozanna and check her mobile phone. Kamath finds out a photo of Lorry in Rozanna. She is allowed to go after she is found innocent. Later, when Kamath and his cops are searching the airport for the drug dealer, Kamath identifies Lorry as the person he had seen in Rozanna's phone. They then detain him and on searching his luggage they find out 2kg out cocaine stuffed in his bag.
Later, Lorry is sent to Juvenile House where he becomes shy and loses faith in himself. Meanwhile Lorry's friend, DJ Joki (Rana Daggubati) tries to get him out. It is then revealed that Zoey and Joki used to date each other since a long time. Zoey was interested in being an air hostess but failed. So Joki introduces her to his boss Lorsa Biscuta a.k.a. the Biscuit (Aditya Pancholi), The boss of Drug dealing in Goa having worldwide contacts. With the help of his contacts, Biscuit gets her an international job in airlines. But she has to pay a price for this. Zoey will have to smuggle Cocaine to international regions five times. Unfortunately Zoey ends up being caught with cocaine worth 80 Lakhs in her luggage and get punished for 14 years in jail. But Biscuit's contact gets her free in 14 days and for that she has to sleep with Biscuit. She then moves on breaking up with Joki and leads her life into drug dealing along with Biscuit. Meanwhile, Kamath carries on with the investigation on who is Michael Barbosa. It takes him to ship where he fights all the gangsters but misses out on Barbosa. This leads him no where.
Sometime later Joki unexpectedly meets Zoey. He asks Zoey to help him out with Lorry. He tries his best to get Barbosa but fails. Zoey at first denies him and asks him to leave but finally Joki convinces her and they both end up sleeping together. Zoey helps him out by giving him a video recording of Biscuit announcing that he is going to throw a huge party in some jungle of Karnataka and at that party Michael Barbosa will be bringing all the drugs which he had with him and will be exchanged at the party. Joki gives this tape to ACP Kamath. Meanwhile, when Biscuit comes to know about the on going relationship between Zoey and Joki, he gets so furious that he kills her. Kamath gets his troops ready but in order to identify Barbosa he needs somebody's help and that somebody will be Lorry. He goes to Juvenile House and asks Lorry about Barbosa. Lorry is scared to answer and this fear makes matters much worse. So Kamath asks him to write down everything even the smallest of the small details about how he was trapped by Ricky into Drug smuggling, and with the help of that he will figure out who Michael Barbosa is. Kamath gets Lorry's Letter and then he attacks Biscuits party in Karnataka. He quickly reads out Lorry's letter and comes to the final conclusion of the entire Drug Racket. After arresting the Drug dealers and the gangsters. While returning back, Kamath's team mate asks him about Barbosa, he gives him lorry's letter and tells him Barbosa exists in that very letter. Kamath's team mate after reading the letter understands and asks for forgiveness. He then fires his gun and kills Kamath. It is then revealed that his teammate was always involved with Biscuit and the whole story fits in place. But still Michael Barbosa is the missing link. Later Joki finds out about Kamath's death and arrives at the crime scene. He finds a postcard next to Kamath's body. Joki then goes to the graveyard where Zoey was cremated and all of a sudden it clicks and he solves the entire mystery. He notices a grave named 'Micheal Barbosa'. Then he remembers Kamath telling him about Barbosa already being dead. He realizes that Barbosa is just a dead name used for channelising the supply of drugs and misleading the cops. He goes there and opens the grave and finds packets of cocaine, heroine and other drugs. he then calls up Biscuit and says that if he wants his drugs back then he will have to clear all the records of his and Lorry's. Later he calls up Kamath's killer and team mate and asks him to come with him to a spot where he has hid all the packets of drugs. Joki takes him to the same place where Kamath was murdered and kills him there too. He says that he came to know about him because of Kamath's postcard where Kamath had written his name in order for Joki to complete his mission. Joki burns the drugs along with Kamath's body in Biscuit's crematorium, with Biscuit watching helplessly. In the end, Biscuit is killed by a girl who he is sleeping with.

Critical
The Times of India, which gave a three and a half rating, mentioned that "The film slags in places and needs tightening, but the lull is followed by a tangy twist in the tale, which makes up for the occasional yawn. Shridhar Raghavan writes a thrilling cops and robbers tale which has some quirky banter scripted by Purva Naresh. Add to this Goa captured in glowing colours by cinematographer Amit Roy and a peppy music score by Pritam, and director Rohan Sippy gives you a film that keeps the popcorn crackling, till the very end".[7]
The Filmfare gave a four star rating stating "Dum Maaro Dum has a taut narrative that doesn’t flail till post interval. It keeps you engrossed through an imaginative blend of some stupendous background music, animated cinematography and simple effective storytelling. The characters are introduced with clarity and soon you get a very clear picture of what’s going with whom. As for the performances Abhishek does an earnest and impressive job. Rana Daggubati sure has an impressive screen presence but we must wait to find out if that dead pan expression is restricted only to this film. Pratik looks dazed and you don’t want to take your eyes off him when he is on screen. Bipasha looks suitably traumatised".[8]
Anupama Chopra of NDTV gave a two and half star rating saying "Dum Maaro Dum has all the ingredients of crackling entertainment. This is one film that should soar but sadly it never quite takes flight. The problem is the writing. has some punchy dialogue-baazi and snazzy action, especially a nicely done shoot-out at a night market. It also features Abhishek’s best performance in recent times. But the narrative slumps in places, the plot has loopholes and the characters just aren’t convincing enough to grab you.[9]
Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama rated the film two and half and noted "Film is like fast food that's high on calories, but falls short in the nutrition department. Yes, it's slick, stylish and well-crafted, but the fact remains that it lacks the power [in its second hour specifically] to create a dum-daar impression. however praised the lead performances. Abhishek is super in the role of a tough cop whose life undergoes a U-turn when personal tragedy strikes. Much of the joy comes from watching Rana Daggubati infuse believability into his character. He's easy on the eyes and is a complete natural when it comes to acting. Bipasha shines in several moments of the film.[10]
Daily News & Analysis gave a three star rating saying "With the body of a modern thriller and the soul of a 1970s masala film, the idea behind the hybridization had potential, but ’Dum Maaro Dum' falls slightly short ".[11]
Critic Raja Sen from Rediff rated the film with two and half saying "Dum Maaro Dum is a very watchable film. It starts off well, without question. but squanders tremendous potential in a puff of white smoke. As can be said the morning after a party with too much cocaine, all that eventually remains are a couple of good lines".[12]
Hindustan Times reviewer Mayank Shankar gave it a three star rating and noted "It just about makes for an enticing thriller here. There's probably an even better film when compressed. But if you stay 'susegaad', relaxed, laidback, it's unlikely that you'll regret the promise of entertainment this picture meets in major portions"[13]
India Today reviewer Kaveree Bamzai gave a three and half rating said that the movie is "With some cutting edge background music and a haunting song by Papon which remains in your head, Dum Maaro Dum is a stylish thriller written as smartly as it is directed".[14]
Sify movies, which gave a two and a half rating, said that "Dum Maaro Dum is worth a watch for the peek into the seamier side of Goa; but expecting anything other than Bollywood style thrills and chases will leave you disappointed".[15] Reuters mentioned that "this one is worth a watch for the great cinematography (Amit Roy), and some good writing. “Dum Maaro Dum” could have been much better had the director seemed more in control of the film, but it is better than most of what Bollywood has dished out this year". [16]
Rajeev Masand of CNN IBN gave it a two star rating explaining " It’s watchable, but it could easily have been so much more. The action sequences add style to the story, with more than one smartly-filmed chase scene. The dialogues too pack quite a punch, before it all starts to feel too much. In the end, it’s Abhishek Bachchan who throws you with his sheer presence. He plays Kamath with just the right amount of steely nerve and naked emotions. Unfortunately it isn’t enough to lift this film from an average drugs-drama to a smart and entertaining action thriller. It’s got its moments, but they’re few and far between".[17]
Box office
Dum Maaro Dum managed a decent opening weekend of 16.5 crore in India[18] and 6.3 crore in the overseas market.[19] After four weeks, the film grossed 31.57 crore in India.[20] According to Vijay Singh, the CEO of Fox Star Studios, the film "recovered its cost of production of Rs 22 crores in the first weekend from theatrical (domestic and International), music (including overflows) and satellite."[19] The film grossed 49.50 crore (US$11.04 million) worldwide.[21]
Controversy
There was controversy over the theme of the film. One particular promotional dialogue from the film "Liquor is cheap here and women are even cheaper here" caused quite a stir.[22] Media professional Savio Rodrigues filed a petition to Goa Bench of Bombay High Court seeking a permanent ban on the movie stating that the wrong portrayal might attract sex offenders, drug launderers and criminals to Goa.[23]

Director Rohan Sippy launched the song Dum Maaro Dum during the 2011 India - South Africa World Cup match on 12 March 2011. 45,000 people attended the match at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur.[5] The music of the film has been composed by Pritam and lyrics were penned by Jaideep Sahni.
