A história segue Janardan Jakhar (Ranbir Kapoor) um rude, ninguém sociais na faculdade em Nova Deli. A boa-para-nada, o filho não cooperativos em casa. E uma luta-músico-com-pouca-esperança para seus amigos e conhecidos. Mas Janardan quer mudar tudo isso. Assim, quando um simpatizante revela o segredo por trás de toda grande sucesso ... que você tem que se apaixonam e, em seguida, quebrar o seu coração. Só então é que sua música se tornar melhor, mais profundo e você será uma estrela. Janardan está determinado a fazer isso acontecer para ele também. Ele faz amizade com Heer (Nargis Fakhri); a garota mais bonita, sofisticada e popular no colégio. A greve de dois uma amizade pouco convencional, e passam os dias juntos em abandono imprudente. Então Heer folhas e Janardan continua com sua vida regular. Ele desiste da música e junta-se ao negócio da família. Mas o destino tem outros planos. Janardan Heer e encontrar novamente. A música para o filme é marcado por associar usual AR Rahman substituindo Imtiaz Ali, Pritam. A trilha sonora apresenta 14 faixas em geral, [7] com todas as letras escritas por Irshad Kamil. Mohit Chauhan nomeadamente havia emprestado sua voz para nove músicas. The story follows Janardan Jakhar (Ranbir Kapoor) an uncouth, social nobody in college in Delhi. A good-for-nothing, uncooperative son at home. And a struggling-musician-with-little-hope to his friends and acquaintances. But Janardan wants to change all that. So when a well wisher discloses the secret behind all great success… that you have to fall in love and then break your heart. Only then will your music become better, deeper and you will be a star. Janardan is determined to make it happen for him too. He befriends Heer (Nargis Fakhri); the most beautiful, sophisticated and popular girl in college. The two strike an unconventional friendship, and spend their days together in reckless abandonment. Then Heer leaves and Janardan continues with his regular life. He gives up music and joins the family business. But fate has other plans. Janardan and Heer meet again. This time things are different. Before he knows it… Janardan embarks on a tumultuous journey of self discovery, longing and restlessness only to realize that the very thing he spent his life looking for was in front of him the whole time.

The lead role is played by Ranbir Kapoor, with whom the Eros International worked recently on Anjaana Anjaani. The female lead will be played by Nargis Fakhri.[4] Other cast members include Piyush Mishra and Shammi Kapoor. The shooting began in May 2010 and the film is scheduled to release on 11 November 2011. The major part of the shooting has took place at locations in kashmir at Kulgam, Kupwara, Srinagar and last phase has been shot in Delhi including, Kotla Mubarakpur, Nizamuddin Dargah, Greater Kailash, Munirika, Indira Gandhi International Airport, Madangir DDA and Connaught Place, and three-day schedule at the Shri Ram College of Commerce, St. Stephen's College, followed by one at the Hindu College, director Imtiaz Ali's alma mater, during the winter break of these colleges.[5] The film would also mark Shammi Kapoor's last appearance in a feature film who had died on August 14, 2011.[6]

The music for the film is scored by A. R. Rahman replacing Imtiaz Ali's usual associate, Pritam. The soundtrack features 14 tracks overall,[7] with all lyrics penned by Irshad Kamil. Mohit Chauhan notably had lent his voice for nine songs. The audio rights have been bought by T-Series,[8] According to Rahman, Rockstar was "a character driven film and as one can guess from the title, there will be lots of guitar".[9] The climax song of the film would have Ranbir Kapoor performing in front of a live audience. Ranbir had travelled to Chennai and stayed with Rahman for a week in order to "feel the song imbibe and absorb it" so that when he finally performs it, the song would be an "extension of his personality."[10] The soundtrack album was released on 30 September, 2011 by T-Series. The album was received with extremely positive responses critically, notably Bollywood Hungama and Milliblog giving a thumbs up and MovieInspector rating it 4.5 on 5. Music Aloud's review called it "a soundtrack of epic proportions", giving it 9.5/10.
